A
Restored 19th Century Log Cabin and 1924 Grain Mill
Clipp's
Mill is
located in the historic town of Sharpsburg. It is close
enough to Antietam Battlefield that a house across the
street has cannon ball damage. Clipp's Mill itself was
built in 1924 to serve the local community. It was last
used in thelate 1960s. It is a three-story structure
with most of the original machinery still inside. The
mill was originally powered by a steam engine, and it
was converted to electricity in the mid 1930s. One central
motor drove the machinery through a system of belts.
Eventually, we hope to restore the mill itself. We also
plan to apply for National Register Status.
When
Clipp's Mill was built, it incorporated an older log structure
dating from the 19th century. This log building was built
for industrial purposes, possibly an earlier mill, and it
became the office for the 1924 mill. We have restored the
log building as a cabin.
