A Creek-Side Cottage in Rural Maryland

Cedar Crest Cottage is located in Washington County, Maryland, about seventy miles west of Washington and Baltimore. The cottage sits on Conococheague Heights, a steep rocky bank overlooking Conococheague Creek. The view includes Wilsons Bridge, a 175-year old, five-arch stone bridge that originally carried the National Pike over the Conococheague.

Cedar Crest Cottage was built about 1930, after the Conococheague Heights was subdivided for vacation cottages. the row of cottages, originally built for residents of Hagerstown, is within sight of U.S. 40. Most of the cottages are now permanently occupied as affordable housing. We have renovated and winterized Cedar Crest Cottage, so that the inside is now attractive and cozy, but we have left the original architectural features in place. In the kitchen, one of the cedar posts that support the cottage is visible, and bedrock impinges on the back of the base cabinets. The original outhouse still stands (now converted to storage). A wishing well at the parking area (with flowers, in season) disguises the cottages commercially supplied cistern. A long flight of steps leads down to the cottage and continues steeply down to Independence Road, which runs along the creek. The grounds are wooded and covered with ivy and rock outcroppings.
